If you are like me, cooking is an expression of love. I enjoy gathering in the kitchen with family and friends to share in a meal and lots of great conversation. My passion for cooking exponentially grew when I had my first baby. I felt an overwhelming responsibility to give her the best possible start in life. I started to think that food is like a big hug from the inside.
It's not all that surprising I feel this way because I came from a family where my mother cooked, and we gathered at the dinner table every night. Even when we got older and were not home to eat together for dinner every night, my mother would make up a plate and keep it warm for when we got home. The sharing of love through food and gathering together is and will always be so important to me.
In the height of COVID 19, with both my daughter’s home and Peter grounded from business travel, I found myself cooking as I did when my daughters were young. Having spent all that time in the kitchen again, I would find myself thinking about how my ideal kitchen would look, feel, and function.
Thinking you too may be in your kitchen cooking more often these days, I thought it would be fun to share with you my findings of the most researched kitchen style and some ways you could get these looks. Without fear, that will be outdated quickly.
Modern Farmhouse made popular by our very own Texas-born Joanna Gaines, and on Fixer Upper is still most popular kitchen design. However, it has created an evolution and encompasses more than what may first pop into your head. One change is the introduction of black on faucets, window frames, and cabinet pulls. I like this industrial take. It is a perfect way to help homeowners with differing tastes add elements they both love for their kitchen.
More than just pretty, kitchens should be hardworking, enjoyable spaces to spend time in. Here are some of the latest ways to get form and function out of the Heart of your Home.
1. Oversized kitchen Island - Oversized multi-functional islands designed for everyday living and entertainment should have lots of space for built-in storage, cooking preparation, recreation, quick bites to eat, and a homework station. Be sure to have outlets for electronics. If you don't have an island, no worries; use these same ideas on your peninsula or wherever possible. Think conceptually.
2. A mix of paint and wood - We are seeing a move away from an all-white kitchen. This says to me, let's layer in some interest unique to your taste. Often that is paint, which can range from a navy to soft shades of green or gray. It means wood, often in lighter shades, to add depth and interest. It evokes the feeling of curated over time, just as you would imagine your family's farmhouse did.
3. Mixed metals – Modern today is the use of different metal finishes. You may find a chrome light fixture, matte black cabinet pulls, and stainless-steel appliances. If carefully planned, this can all work very nicely together and be super interesting. No one wants their home to feel cookie cutter. We will leave that for our Holiday cookies.
4. Elements found traditionally outside – Nothing grounds a space more than the beautiful features found in nature and used inside. Rattan light fixtures are a favorite of mine. I also love displaying well-worn wood cutting boards of different shapes and sizes. I usually like tools out of site but not those it is practical and functional, and each knife slice reminds me of meals past.
5. Tiles – Hand painted, distressed, marble, or marble look are all perfect choices for this style. Backsplashes are often the smallest surface to tile, making it a great place to add some intrigue. For example, I had a client who was in love with a particular handmade tile for her backsplash, and we designed the rest of the kitchen around it. It's stunning.
In addition to the esthetics, here are a couple more thoughts if you consider making some changes to your kitchen. Improving the overall look and feel should be the primary motivating factor in addition to improving function. Upgrading appliances, maybe adding a wine refrigerator, and improving storage may also add to your remodel's overall happiness. With the holidays just around the corner, I am super excited to get my kitchen ready to cook our traditional dishes and the new recipes we find along the way.
